C-reactive protein
C-reactive protein (CRP) is the prototypical hepatic acute-phase reactant, synthesised in response to interleukin-6 and rising with systemic inflammation, infection, and tissue damage. Salivary CRP reflects the magnitude of the post-exercise inflammatory response and cumulative training stress, with elevations signalling incomplete recovery or maladaptation. Wenzel et al. (2026) and Yi et al. (2025) measured salivary CRP among markers of physiological strain and exercise-induced muscle damage.
